From 2023, we’re introducing the new Junior Tyro Rotax class for drivers from the year of their 13th birthday through to the end of the year of their 18th! The kart? Manufactured by Wright Karts who have over 40 years’ experience of manufacturing and racing karts throughout the world. The engine? Well, that will be the Evo Rotax Junior motor.
Tyro Junior Rotax follows the concepts and ethos from Tyro Mini, which has been established for 10 years. All the karts are equal with no additional parts allowed that will change or enhance the performance of the kart. Here, we’re all about the driver.
If you can say yes to any of the above, Tyro Junior could be for you!
The idea for introducing the new Tyro Junior Rotax class came from our own ideas on how to develop Tyro and importantly with valuable input from current Tyro Mini competitors and their families. This includes several drivers who will either exceed the maximum age or weight limit for Tyro Mini at the end of the 2022 season. Drivers have been looking for their next step, and how to advance in their karting career.
What they’ve been looking for was a class with the same concept and ethos as the current Tyro Mini class, as well as one with an emphasis on cost of purchasing a kart and running costs.
Our brief was clear - from drivers and from their families. We had to introduce a new Tyro Junior class which would mirror the successful Tyro Mini class.
We believe we have achieved that objective with the new Tyro Junior Rotax class. All forms of motorsport are expensive, but what Tyro achieved when launched in 2013 was a class of karting that prevented limitless spending on the kart to go quicker. With us, it really has always been about the driver and how they can go quicker.
We’ve also always believed in families supporting and helping each other should the need arise. There exists a real sense of community within the Tyro paddock, a feature competitors and families have always stressed is important to keep and continue to nurture.

Each set of slick or wet tyres supplied by Tyro are required to be used for a minimum of 4 race days (not including practice days or wet tyres). Once the minimum number of race days has been achieved, a new set can be purchased from Tyro. This is optional, competitors will be permitted to race tyres for more than 4 race days, however, a set of tyres must be used for a minimum of 4 race days before new tyres are permitted. Compared with Mojos, this represents a saving of £615.56 over a 4-race period. Over a 20-race calendar, this represents an annual saving of £3,062.80.
All Junior Rotax engines will be sealed by Beddall Race Tuning, BRT. Tyro have worked with BRT from the very start of the Tyro class in 2013. Any driver who supplies their own engine and purchases a Tyro Junior rolling chassis will be required to have their engine dyno tested and sealed by BRT.
BRT have precise BHP parameters to work in, any engine that exceeds the permitted BHP will not be approved. This activity applies to all competitors and will prevent any modifications to the engine, thereby giving someone a competitive advantage. Zero modifications are allowed.
All Tyro Junior karts will run to the same specification. Any changes to enhance performance are strictly prohibited. To keep costs down, below is an example of what would be required in Rotax classes to be competitive but are not permitted in Junior Tyro.
A medium axel is the only one permitted for use. There is no need to invest in a soft and hard axel, a saving of £313.68.
Aluminum rims are the only wheels permitted. Magnesium MXC rims are not permitted, a saving of £520.08.
The only seat permitted for use will be the seat the kart is delivered with. Soft seats are not permitted. A saving of £184.00.
Maxxis Sport slicks are the approved choice of tyre. Competitors must use a set of slicks for a minimum of 4 race days. Compared with Mojos, this represents over a 4-race period a saving of £601.31. Over a 20-race calendar this represents an annual saving of £3,062.80.
The above examples are a fraction of the options available for the potential increase in kart performance. In addition to the above, you could also include short, medium and long wheel hubs. Magnesium engine mounts, magnesium bearing carriers, carbon fiber seats and the list goes on.
In essence, once the Junior Tyro is delivered from the factory, nothing can be changed on the kart. Kart set up and adjustment is permitted using only the adjustable components on the delivered kart.
There are 2 purchasing options. The first, a fully equipped kart with a Rotax Junior motor - just add fuel, and you’re ready to go! Or you can choose a rolling chassis, enabling you to use your own junior Rotax motor. If you’re looking to race competitively on a level-playing field where it’s all about the driver, Tyro Junior Rotax is for you.
Fully race ready and prepared kart, which includes:
All you need to do is add fuel.
If you are currently racing in another Junior class, the cost savings you will make over a 20-race calendar should you join Tyro would enable you to buy a Tyro Junior rolling chassis!
Please note that your engine will have to dyno checked and sealed by BRT.
You could be one of the drivers on the grid next race weekend
